Wednesday's play-in game between the Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers garnered an average of 5.6 million viewers and peaked at 6.1 million late in the Lakers' 103-100 victory.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated, "I personally have a big appetite and it may be bigger than some of our clubs and even some of the players."
“The play-in tournament was met with some opposition. I'm hoping it's a new feature in our game. “We are hoping to move forward with that.”
In-season tournaments have already been discussed. We're all admirers of various leagues, especially those from around the world.
I believe there is a sense of having something other than the title to play for; not to imply that the ultimate goal isn't to win the championship, but perhaps to accomplish something over the season.
It's something we're looking into further. Obviously, that won't happen next season, but we're in talks with the players' association and teams about it.”
The NBA's plan to organise a Play-In Tournament did not sit well with LeBron James.
Regardless, the Lakers have clinched the 7th seed in the NBA Playoffs and will face the Phoenix Suns.
LeBron remarked of the play-in tournament, "Whoever came up with that s— ought to be fired."
Adam Silver's Statement :
“I haven't hidden the fact that I want it [to remain around for a long time].” I need to persuade two constituencies of this.
One is the 30 teams, and I believe they have largely backed it. Again, if I were a team - a 7-seed in particular - I get the feeling that after a lengthy season, you might be forced to play out of the playoffs.
I understand how you feel. At the same time, I believe the teams appreciate that the increased attention we've generated throughout the last month of the season, as well as the play-in games, make it worthwhile.
The players, of course, are the other constituency. One player on the union's executive committee, for example, told me yesterday that while he enjoys the play-in tournament, he believes it could be a little unfair.
